JUMPSTART - Heart, Lungs and Blood

For Jumpstart 2020 we have been exploring the functions of the heart and blood, how it circulates around the body and is filled with oxygen by the lungs in a closed circuit system called the cardiovascular system.

We learnt about the structure and function of the heart and how it does one of the most vital and important jobs in our body.

To extend the learning of this topic, we were able to get some real sheep hearts and lungs from AFFCO and have a fun, hands-on and interactive experience where the students were able to see, feel and explore how the heart and lungs work.

It has been a very fun topic which I think most of the students enjoyed, however, some have said they might become vegetarians now.

Here are some cool photos of the students in 9M engaging with this topic. Ka mau te wehi!

Over the past few weeks we have been comparing a European culture with that of New Zealand. Students chose a European country either singly or in pairs, and chose 4 aspects of culture to focus on. We decided to look at these aspects of culture in depth, rather than as a broad picture. The students were encouraged to add depth to their ideas by explaining in more detail, and using detailed evidence. We also worked on embedding videos in their slides to help explain their ideas.

Overall I am very impressed with the work produced - well done class, this is a great foundation to take into Year 10 and beyond!

Food and digestion

In Science we have been studying about types of nutrition and how the body digests food. This week we have been learning about the different types of teeth. Teeth can be used to figure out if the animal is a herbivore or a carnivore and these teeth have different uses and functions in the physical/mechanical digestive process. Students in our class have been very creative and made some videos to explain what they learned.

Here is an example from Luke, Katipa and Haki.

Descriptive writing

9M have been working on their descriptive writing pieces for the last week or two and today they published them to their blog.  The purpose of the task was to show rather than tell about their person. To do this, we focused on using sensory language and imagery to create a snapshot of their person. I Think they made a really good start, don't you? 😀

Have a look at our writer of the week, Lilly, and her fabulous description of her friend on this link:   Lilly Motti
